The resonance of the word in Monteverdi Opera

With Claudio Desderi

05 - 09 October 2015

Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

The way how Claudio Monteverdi uses the word on his music is a landmark for the opera tradition. He claims in his music the quality of the word as the principal resource for creating a dramatic expression reflected on the music (“Prima le parole, poi la musica”). Times to times in the music history we find some echo of this Monteverdi heritage in some of the major opera composers such as Mozart or Rossini.

For the singers, even for those who are not expecting to be specialised on Monteverdi opera, the study of Monteverdi singing will help them to go deeper in other repertoires on the importance of word as the basis of the production of musical meaning.

The workshop will be focused on the importance of the vocality of the word on the development of dramaturgic meaning on Monteverdi music.

Claudio Desderi will lead singers on the peculiar aspects of Monteverdi vocal writing, such as the word rhythm, language accent, music style and so on.

Claudio Desideri has sung at all major opera theatres around the world since his debut at Edimburgh Festival in 1969. During his long singer career he frequently visits stages like La Scala, Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, Salzburg, Opéra de Paris, among others, collaborating with prominent conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Mutti, Bernard Haitink and Sylvain Cambreling, and stage directors such as Giorgio Strehler and Jean Pierre Ponnelle. He dedicated peculiar attention to Mozart and Rossini operas, but his repertoire extended from Monteverdi to Nono. As important as his voice qualities were his fine acting skills and his superb diction, which all together contributed to his outstanding prestige either as singer and actor. In the last years Claudio Desderi reputation has been amplified with his conducting activities and has been particularly highlighted on the pedagogical area, where his regular collaboration with Verbier Festival Academy emerges relevant.
