Composing for Voices and Orchestra is an opportunity for young composers to improve their skills in writing for a both rich and complex sound display. It is a place to discuss and explore new ideas and the creative processes, in collaboration with the Orquestra Gulbenkian and professional singers.
The workshop will be mentored by the Italian composer Luca Francesconi, sharing his substantial experience both on the opera field and working with singers, coaching participants and following their projects.
Over a period of eight months, participants will create new works that will be premiered in a public concert with the Orquestra Gulbenkian, conducted by Luca Francesconi.
The workshop is structured in three periods, which take place during three separate time periods:
/!\ It is mandatory to attend the 3 phases.
>> Period 1 – 22-23 November 2023 (2 days): Collective and individual sessions with Luca Francesconi - Participants will discuss contemporary composition practices and will present initial ideas that they intend to develop during the workshop under the guidance of the tutor. Moreover, they will have a first contact with Orquestra Gulbenkian, attending rehearsals and meeting musicians.
>> Period 2 – 26-27th February 2024: Reading sessions with Orquestra Gulbenkian and singers - Participants will have the chance to test their works in development on a kind of voice and orchestra laboratory and they will subsequently receive guidance regarding their creative process from the tutor.
Period 3 – 24-28th June 2024: Orchestra rehearsals for presentation of new works - Participants will attend orchestral rehearsals in the preparation process of the performance of their works. This last workshop phase ends with the premiere of their new works in a public concert by Orquestra Gulbenkian on 28th June 2024.

- Call for participants is open to composers under de age of 35 years old (on 31.12.2023), who have with Portuguese residency or are recommended by enoa member organizations.
- Composers not based in Portugal must contact their referent organization, which decides whether or not to support their participation.
- The candidate must fill in the online form on the Gulbenkian Música website.
- Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation will announce the list of participants by the first week of October 2023.
- The network will be responsible for expenses associated with workshop mentorship and, in the case of non-local participants, it will be responsible for the expenses of travel and accommodation.
All qualified composers are encouraged to apply and will be considered regardless their personal situation. If for some reason a participant has any constraints regarding his/her full involvement in the workshop activities, Gulbenkian will try to provide assistance and find solutions.

> List of works with information about creation context (creation year, world premiere, commissioner, etc.)
> Link(s) to the audio of up to 3 works
Participants should consider the following instrumentation for their work: 3,3,3,3 / 4,3,3,1 / 2 perc. / strings + 1 or 2 singers (tessituras to be announced)
Participants must be prepared to provide their scores properly edited and ready to be rehearsed/performed by singers and orchestra, including orchestral parts.
