This new opera is inspired by the true story of Ruby McDonough.
Ruby is a remarkable woman who lives with aphasia, a widely misunderstood communication disability, which means she is able to say only a few words, though her intelligence is unaffected. After being sexually assaulted by one of her carers, Ruby took him to court, only to be told by a judge she was ‘incompetent’ and therefore not allowed to testify. Undeterred, Ruby relentlessly fought discrimination in the legal system and, in doing so, revolutionised the treatment of people with communication disabilities in court. Though her voice had been taken from her, her courage and tenacity ultimately forced the world to sit up and listen.
